The department said Ahmed Ghailani arrived in the early morning hours Tuesday. U.S. Marshals took custody of Ghailani from his military jailers and brought him to the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan. Ghailani is scheduled to appear in Manhattan federal court later Tuesday.
''With his appearance in federal court today, Ahmed Ghailani is being held accountable for his alleged role in the bombing of U.S. Embassies in Tanzania and Kenya and the murder of 224 people,'' Attorney General Eric Holder said in a press release. ''The Justice Department has a long history of securely detaining and successfully prosecuting terror suspects through the criminal justice system, and we will bring that experience to bear in seeking justice in this case.''

LONDON (AFP) — A Muslim catering manager refused to cook sausages and bacon because he feared he would be splashed with pork fat, he told an industrial tribunal Monday, alleging religious discrimination.
Hasanali Khoja, 60, from London, said he felt he was at risk of contact with pork products even if he wore gloves and used tongs to cook.
Khoja, who claims he was discriminated against due to his Islamic faith, also alleges that in a meeting to resolve the situation, a human resources manager pulled faces and made racist gestures.

HONOLULU (AP) - Hawaii's state Senate has overwhelmingly approved a bill to celebrate "Islam Day" - over the objections of a few lawmakers who said they didn't want to honor a religion connected to Sept. 11, 2001.Fantastic!!!
The resolution to proclaim Sept. 24, 2009, as Islam Day passed the Senate on a 22-3 vote Wednesday. It previously passed the House.
The measure now goes to the governor.
The bill seeks to recognize "the rich religious, scientific, cultural and artistic contributions" that Islam and the Islamic world have made.
Mr. Holder said that of the 241 inmates still held in Guantánamo Bay, 30 could now be released. In the coming weeks, he said, specific countries in Europe would be asked to take specific detainees. Letters tell an alternate story in Fort Dix caseUh...no...the letters (from relatives of the convicted) are pleas from interested parties stating the usual "but they're good boys" schtick.
Since their conviction, more than a half-dozen family members have sent letters to U.S. District Judge Robert Kugler asking for the verdicts to be overturned. The letters are the latest in a case where participants have come to see the judge as a pen pal: all five of the convicts have written Kugler at least once since they were arrested nearly two years ago.A good Judge would '86' the letters without reading them. The jury spoke...the defendants were most definitely guilty of conspiracy. Had law enforcement waited longer to make the arrest, they could have tacked on a conviction for "attempted murder" as well.
In this case, the government filed a long brief arguing that there was ample evidence to convict the men.
